How can I get my hair to STAY wavy after braiding?

I am braiding my hair tonight so it can be wavy tomorrow. My hair is really long and thick and naturally straight, and everytime I braid it and take the braids out in the morning, the wave goes away in about 20 minutes. How can I get the wave to last longer? I am already waiting until it dries to take the braid out, but the wave still goes away. Any kind of styling stuff i can put in that WONT make my hair all sticky and gross?

make the braid really tight.

since your hair is long, you may have to keep it in braids for a full day, re-do it at night, then try it the next day.

try making ONE tight braid. my friend does it all the time with her long hair and it always keeps it wavy.

dry hair 1/2 way.... section and spray with hairspray.... braid and respray... wear in overnight,,, spray before taking them out...................it works i have been a hairstylist for 23 years.....have fun

They actually sell a mousse that promotes curls- try that and also try lightly spraying your braids with hair spray BEFORE taking the braids out- let them dry- and I assume you are braiding your hair wet, ,that also helps keep the curl in, but you need a mousse to be applied to the wet hair- make more braids so there is less hair in each braid to help make the curl tighter and the hairspray before removing the braid will "set" the curl-- don't comb it with a brush or comb after taking the braids out- just lightly put your fingers through your hair to adjust the curls like you want and even spray a little more.

I use mouse and setting lotion, put those on while its wet let it completely dry and you wont have any problems.

Wet your hair and then braid it tightly. Also DON'T brush it after you take you hair out of the braids! It creates a major frizzy mess! ( I know from experience...haha)
